Selling a car is always a step forward: a vehicle upgrade, a lifestyle change, or simply a necessity. But after the deal is made, a logical question arises: What to do with current insurance? Should I cancel it? Can I transfer it to a new owner? Or get compensation? In this article, we will look at all the options in detail and give clear answers so that you don't lose money and avoid trouble.
1. What kind of insurance do they mean? 🤔
There are two main types of auto insurance in Ukraine:
🔹 OSCPV (autocivil) — mandatory insurance that every driver must have. Covers damages caused to other participants in an accident.
🔹 CASCO — voluntary insurance that protects your car (against theft, natural disasters, road accidents, etc.).
✅ The article discusses both types, because with each of them, the actions after selling a car are different.
2. Does the insurance transfer to the new car owner? 🔄
🔹 OSCPV does NOT transfer automatically!
According to current legislation, Insurance is tied to the owner, not the car. After the sale, the previous contract becomes invalid.
🔹 CASCO - individually.
Transfer of CASCO is possible only with the consent of the insurance company. Usually it is canceled, and the owner receives compensation for the unused period.
3. I sold my car — what to do with the OSCPV? 🧾
After the sale of the car, the OSCPV automatically loses its validity, but:
✅ It is necessary to notify the insurance company
— preferably in writing or via the online office
— add a copy of the purchase and sale agreement or technical passport with the new owner
✅ You can get a partial refund.
— for unused months of the policy
— a refund is possible if the policy is paid in advance (for example, for a year)
📌 Example:
You took out a 12-month CPL, sold the car after 4. The insurance company must return the money in 8 months (minus the commission).
4. What to do with CASCO after the sale? 💼
CASCO is personal insurance with higher coverage amounts. After selling a car:
🔹 CASCO is not automatically transferred to the new owner
🔹 You need to contact your insurance company for termination of contract
🔹 You will receive partial refund for the unused period
📌 IMPORTANTLY: return can be incomplete, depending on company policy (some charge a commission or have restrictions in the contract)
5. If the car is transferred to a relative or friend without re-registration 🤝
In this case:
🔸 Insurance is formally valid, but in the event of an accident, the insurance company may refuse to pay if another driver was behind the wheel (if he is not listed in the policy).
✅ Decision: Add a new user to the policy as one allowed to manage or issue a new policy for the new owner.
6. How to get a refund for an unused policy? 💸
🔹 Write a statement to terminate the contract
🔹 Attach copies of: — passport
— identification code
— purchase and sale agreement
🔹 Specify the details for a refund
📬 You can submit an application:
In person at the insurance office
By email
Through the online office on the insurance company's website
⌛ The return period is usually up to 10 business days.
7. Can I transfer insurance to a new car? 🚗➡️🚗
Some insurance companies allow transfer of an existing policy for a new car provided that:
✅ Written request
✅ Recalculation of the cost of insurance (if the car has different characteristics)
✅ No insured events in the previous period
This can be convenient if you are immediately buying a new car after selling your old one.
8. What happens if you don't notify the insurance company? ⚠️
🔸 The OSCPV will become invalid after the car is re-registered, but the insurance company will continue to consider you a client
🔸 Can be accrued Unjustified payments or no refund for unused period
🔸 In case of a traffic accident - risk of litigation
👉 Therefore, it is better to complete everything officially and on time.
9. Useful tips 💡
✅ Always keep copies of all documents (insurance, sales contract, technical passport)
✅ Don't forget check if the policy was automatically renewed
✅ Check all the details with a specific insurance company - policies may vary
✅ If the car was transferred by proxy, it is still better to renew the insurance
