How to avoid fraud when buying a car in Ukraine? 🚫🚗

The Ukrainian car market is active and diverse, but, unfortunately, along with good offers, you can easily come across car scammers. They work subtly, professionally and inventively. And even experienced buyers sometimes fall into the trap 😬.

In this article we will talk about The most common fraud schemes when buying a car in Ukraine and give clear tips on how to protect yourself.

🚨 1. “Beautiful Wrap” Scheme – Car After a Serious Accident

This is the most popular method of deception.

🔧 Cars after an accident (total) are hastily restored, polished, covered with paint — and sold as “after a light touch.”

❗ Sellers often hide:

  • body geometry (it is already broken)

  • open airbags (simply “sewn in”)

  • corrosion after water flooding

📌 How to protect yourself?

  • Order inspection at the service station or an expert before buying

  • Check paint thickness (thickness gauge)

  • Use CarVertical, AutoCheck or VINBot services

🕵️‍♂️ 2. Forged documents or wanted cars

There are scammers who sell:

  • stolen cars with altered license plates

  • car with someone else's documents

  • cars that are under arrest or on loan

📌 How to check?

  • Check the VIN in the vehicle registration document and on the body

  • Check your car on official services:

  • Get an extract from the register of property encumbrances

💸 3. Fake prepayments or “book a car”

A very common scheme on the Internet.

📱 You see an attractive ad: “the car is in perfect condition”, the price is 20-30% below the market. The seller says: “There are a lot of interested parties, put down at least 1000 UAH as a deposit — I will hold you accountable”.

After payment — the seller disappears.

📌 How not to get caught?

  • Never send a deposit.without seeing the car in person

  • Use only personal meeting and document verification

  • Check seller's phone number on Google/OLX — he often appears in other scams

👥 4. “Overselling in the guise of the owner”

At first glance, he looks like an ordinary person, saying, “I’m selling my car.” But in reality, he’s a buyer who just reissued the vehicle registration certificate.

He can:

  • hide real mileage

  • not to know car history

  • increase the price several times

📌 How to detect?

  • Ask how many years he has owned the car.

  • Look at the registration date in the technical passport

  • Beast from the PTS, are there any changes in the registration?

  • Check if there have been any accidents (even if it says “ideally”)

💼 5. Selling a car that does not belong to the seller

Some “owners” are selling cars:

  • by general power of attorney

  • by by proxy without the right to sell

And then the real owner can revoke the power of attorney, the car will be seized, and you will be left with nothing 😱

📌 What to do?

  • Buy only from the real ownerspecified in the technical data sheet

  • Sign purchase and sale agreement only at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service center

⚠️ 6. Inflated mileage - a “young” car that is 15 years old

This is a classic of the market. The mileage is reduced by 3–4 times to sell at a higher price.

🧪 You can check the actual mileage:

  • According to the service book (if it is not fake)

  • Through CarVertical, AutoCheck

  • For signs of wear: steering wheel, seat, pedals, dashboard

📌 If the car has “50 thousand km of mileage” and the steering wheel is already “licking in your hand” — something is wrong here 🤔

🛑 7. Selling “drowned people” from Europe or the USA

After the flood, cars are sold cheaply at auctions, taken to Ukraine, cleaned a bit, and sold as “clean from Europe.”

🛠️ Problems with electronics, rot, and odor may appear after a few months.

📌 How to check?

  • Learn the history of your car through Carfax, Autohistory

  • Look for oxidation under the hood, musty odor, moisture

  • Ask questions about the origin of the car and request confirmation

How to protect yourself: a checklist for a car buyer

☑️ Always check the VIN code
☑️ Buy a car personally — not online
☑️ Get it checked at a service station
☑️ Sign the contract only in service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
☑️ Don't pay deposits to strangers
